Alejandro Tosti and Andy Zhang play their last round as Gators
STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Gators fell just short of making the top 15 for the fourth round of the NCAA Championships Sunday.
Florida finished 18th after carding a final round of 300 (+12). Junior Gordon Neale posted the low Gator round of the day at 1-over par.
After carding a 299 (+11), the NCAA Rules Officials assessed a penalty stroke to both junior Neale and freshman Chris Nido. The officials assessed the penalty stroke for slow play after both player's groups missed two check points in their round.
This was the final rounds for senior Alejandro Tosti and sophomore Andy Zhang. Tosti finished tied John Axelsen for the low score on the team. Both players carded a 220 (+4) to place themselves inside of the top 50 on the leaderboard. Axelsen and Tosti were just one stroke off of advancing to Monday as individual competitors.
Tosti completes his Florida career with two trips to the NCAA Championship as well as winning the 2017 SEC Individual Championship. In 2016-17, Tosti tied the program record for stroke average with a 70.55 average.
Zhang's UF career ended with some hardware as well. He took home the 2018 SEC Individual Championship and the NCAA Regional back-to-back. He is the only player in program history to accomplish this feat. Zhang will forgo his final two years of college eligibility and turn pro after playing a full amateur schedule this summer.
Coach's Take:
"Disappointing for our season to end today. It wasn't the expected result but, I am so proud of this group and all they sacrificed to be in this position. We were a top-10 team all year long and that's not easy to do. It took a lot of hard work, dedication and talent. Our guys should be very, very proud." -- Coach J.C. Deacon
