The Gators shot a 14-under final round to move up four spots led by Josh Bai’s 64 (-6).
CHICAGO – The No. 1 Florida men's golf team closed the Fighting Illini Collegiate on a strong note, shooting the low round of the day at 14-under to move up four spots and finish tied for fifth Saturday at Olympia Fields Country Club.
The course played extremely low, with the field averaging 68.87 on the par-70 South Course. Fourteen of the 15 teams finished under par, with 13 teams finishing at double digits under par, as Arizona State won the team title at 40-under.
Making his second appearance in the lineup, Josh Bai led the Gators with a t-sixth-place finish. The New Zealand native set career lows in both round score (64) and 54-hole score (200), beating his previous round record by three shots and his tournament mark by 12 shots. He shot a bogey-free 64 (-6) in the final round, his second consecutive bogey-free round. Across 54 holes, Bai made 12 birdies, 40 pars and just two bogeys.
Luke Poulter also finished with a new career low in 54-hole score, carding a 202 (-8). Tied for 14th, the senior shot a bogey-free 66 (-4) in the final round, his second mistake-free round of the weekend. Across 54 holes, Poulter made nine birdies, an eagle, 42 pars, one bogey and one double bogey.
Parker Sands and Jack Turner each finished at 3-under to tie for 44th, along with Trevor Gutschewski, who competed as an individual this weekend. Sands carded a 66 (-4) over the final 18 holes to tie his career-low round.
The Gators continue the fall season at the Hamptons Intercollegiate Oct. 5-6 at Maidstone Club.
