GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Dallas Wilson had a lot on his mind as he walked across Spurrier-Florida Field with his helmet in hand, looking down at the green grass and white stripes while those wearing black and garnet celebrated.
After Florida's 38-19 loss to South Carolina, the sophomore wide receiver asked to say something after head coach Jon Sumrall finished addressing the team.
"I felt like it was a good moment," Wilson said this week. "I just said what my heart felt. That was it."
Wilson said his message was intended to lift his teammates' spirits while also turning the page. Florida had just suffered its second straight loss, falling to a South Carolina team that arrived for UF Homecoming with a 2-3 record and an 0-3 mark in Southeastern Conference play.

Wilson may not be the oldest player in the locker room, but his production and personality have helped him emerge as a leader for the Gators. Wilson leads Florida with 26 catches for 376 yards and three touchdowns at midseason.
Wilson's message resonated with his teammates.
"I loved it," junior linebacker Myles Graham said. "I think it was called for. I was locked in, and I was really proud of him. He has a lot of passion, a lot of energy, every single day, and it makes our team better. So that was something we needed in the moment, and I'm proud of him, and I appreciate him stepping up and saying what needed to be said."
The Gators have an uphill climb ahead after back-to-back losses. They travel to face No. 7 Texas this week before an open date, then meet No. 1 Georgia in Atlanta.
Sumrall has said that good teams are coach-led, but great teams are player-led. What he saw from his team at halftime against the Gamecocks fell short of his standards, and he knows the Gators must change.
"We're down 17-10. I go into halftime, we're in a weather delay, and I walk in the locker room. I look around, and I look at the guys, and man, you would have thought somebody's dog died," Sumrall said. "I'm like, 'Boys, we're down seven points, and we get the ball to (start the) half. We got a pulse. We got a chance,' " Sumrall said. "I think we're having to help our guys overcome where we have to grow as a football team."
After a day off Sunday to process the loss, the Gators returned to the facility with a better attitude, according to Sumrall.
He acknowledged that his coaching approach changes with wins and losses, but his message remains consistent: stay composed, be direct and reinforce the standards needed to reach their goals.
"It starts with me, leading the guys," Sumrall said. "The guys were great this morning in meetings with corrections and taking ownership. And we're trying to lay a foundation in how we want this to look moving forward. And we've got a lot of work to do. But guys have had the right demeanor, the right mindset as we started this new week."
The Gators had little time to dwell on their latest defeat. They needed to redirect their energy to the challenge ahead instead of staying stuck on what went wrong.
Wilson took a step in that direction after the loss to South Carolina.
Now, as Florida navigates a difficult stretch, Wilson's message raises the question of whether other players will follow his lead.
"Just sticking to the basics," Wilson said. "Sticking to basically going back to our craft, going back to the things we did when everything was going good. Be more intentional with what we're doing when we're working. Let's cut all the small chatter and stuff. Let's stay away from the media and things like that. We are a team. We gotta stick together.
"It's the point of the season where people are looking for us to get torn apart."
