Former UF right-hander Franco Aleman will be the 90th Gator to play in the MLB when he debuts.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Cleveland Guardians are promoting former Florida right-handed pitcher Franco Aleman to the Major League roster for his big-league debut.
Called on to add depth to the Cleveland bullpen, Aleman will represent the 90th Gator to play in the MLB when he debuts. When that time comes, he will mark Florida's nation-leading 42nd former player to debut since 2008 as well as the 38th MLB Gator to compete under Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan. Aleman is the first Gator to receive the call to The Show since left-handed pitcher Hunter Barco's debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept. 23, 2025.
Things have clicked for Aleman in his fifth professional season. Pitching at Triple-A Columbus, Aleman struck out 18 batters to four walks across 12.0 shutout innings of relief spread over 13 outings. The Tampa, Fla. native was utterly dominant before earning his promotion, logging a 0.58 WHIP and 13.5 strikeouts per nine while surrendering just three hits.
Drafted by Cleveland in the 10th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Aleman played one season with the Gators after beginning his career at FIU (2019) and St. Johns River State College (2020). In his lone 2021 campaign at Florida, he made 23 appearances including nine starts with a 5.74 ERA over 69.0 frames. Aleman struck out 65 batters against 21 free passes while holding hitters to a .274 batting average.
Aleman and the Guardians open a nine-game homestand in Cleveland on Friday night against the Minnesota Twins at 7:15 p.m. ET, which will be the former Gator's first chance to get a tase of big-league action.
