
Almón, Dominican Republic qualify for the 2027 AmeriCup

McMiller named to All-Star Five
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida forward Aurora Almón and her Dominican Republic teammates defeated the Virgin Islands 102-69 Saturday to take the bronze medal at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2027 Centrobasket Qualifiers, earning a spot in the 2027 AmeriCup in the process.
The junior forward scored 10 points on five of seven shooting from the field, grabbed four rebounds, handed out three assists, picked up two steals and blocked a pair of shots in the victory.
On Friday night, the Dominican Republic dropped a 90-80 decision in the semifinals to Puerto Rico as Almón scored four points and grabbed a game-high tying eight rebounds. They reached the semis thanks to a 93-60 win over El Salvador in the quarterfinals. Almón had six points, and game-highs of eight rebounds and five assists in the quarters.
The Dominican Republic went 4-2 in the tournament, and Almón averaged 5.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists over her six games.
Almón's new Gators teammate Kiyomi McMiller led Nicaragua to a fifth-place finish in the Qualifiers. On Friday, Nicaragua upended El Salvador 92-75 thanks to McMiller's 33-point, 13-rebound double-double. The Florida guard also added seven assists and a pair of steals in the victory.
On Saturday, McMiller's 33 points and six rebounds helped Nicaragua to a 92-87 overtime win over Guyana. Over Nicaragua's five games, McMiller averaged a tournament-high 29.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists, earning her a place on the All-Star Five, which recognized the tournament's top performers.
Puerto Rico defeated Mexico in the Finals to win its fifth straight title.
FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2027 is slated for July 3-11, 2027 in El Salvador. Six of the ten participating teams have already been decided. El Salvador receives an automatic berth as the host team, and Canada and the United States are also automatic entries. The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Mexico punched their tickets over the weekend.
The final four spots will be awarded at the 2026 South American Championship in Zárate, Argentina from August 1-9, 2026. Competing in the event are Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela and Brazil.
The top four teams in the AmeriCup 2027 will qualify for the 2028 FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, where they will compete to appear in the 2028 Olympic Games.
