Gators Await Fate in 2026 MLB Draft
Thursday, July 9, 2026 | Baseball
Florida has produced 231 unique draftees and 26 first-round picks since the MLB Draft began in 1965.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – As the week of the 2026 MLB Draft arrives, a select group of Florida Gators are days away from having their names called and adding to an elite legacy of pro talent produced by the Orange & Blue.
The 2026 MLB Draft begins on Saturday, July 11 at 1 p.m. with coverage of the first ten picks of the first round exclusively on NBC and Peacock until 2:30 p.m. At that time, MLB Network will air picks 11-40 across the next two hours from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. before moving to MLB.com at 4:30 p.m for picks 41-135. Rounds 5-20 are scheduled for Sunday, July 12 beginning at 11:30 a.m. on MLB.com.
As part of 2026 MLB All-Star Break festivities, this year's draft is held inside the Grand Hall at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Penn.
Broadcast Schedule
Dating back to the inaugural year of the MLB Draft in 1965, Florida has seen 231 individuals combine for 261 draft selections, including 20 first-round picks (26 counting the draft's secondary phase). Florida's MLB Draft history has been even more impressive in the Kevin O'Sullivan era (2008-present), boasting 116 draft selections and 14 first-round picks – the latter ranking second nationally. Developing hurlers has been a major calling card of the program across the past 19 seasons, totaling 64 draft picks on the mound since 2008 for an average of 3.6 per year. Most impressively, 23 of those arms were selected in the first-five rounds for the third-highest total in the sport during that span.
Florida has generated an MLB Draft pick every year since 1997 excluding the COVID-shortened, 2020 Draft, including six players last July: shortstop Colby Shelton (Round 6, Pick 166 – Chicago White Sox), right-handed pitcher Jake Clemente (Round 7, Pick 198 – Miami Marlins), left-hander Pierce Coppola (Round 7, Pick 211 – Chicago Cubs), third baseman Bobby Boser (Round 11, Pick 320 – Athletics) catcher Luke Heyman (Round 14, Pick 422 – Seattle Mariners) and catcher/designated hitter Brody Donay (Round 17, Pick 507 – Tampa Bay Rays).
Over the history of the program, 91 Gators have gone on to play in MLB. A nation-leading 43 Gators have made their MLB debuts since O'Sullivan's 2008 arrival. No other program has produced as many as 40 big leaguers in that stretch.
Additional MLB Draft Notables Entering 2026
Peterson is primed to become the 21st first-round pick in program history (27th counting the secondary phase). Should Peterson come off the board in the first-20 selections, he would rank among the five-highest-drafted UF pitchers of all time.

- Excluding the COVID-shortened, five-round MLB Draft in 2020, at least one Gator has been selected every year since 1997 featuring multiple UF players in every draft since 1998.
- Outside of the 2020 MLB Draft, the Orange & Blue has recorded at least three draft picks in every season of O'Sullivan's 18-year tenure – a streak which dates back 24 years through the 2002 draft.
- Florida has registered at least four draft picks in 16 of the last 17 years, only failing to do so in the abbreviated 2020 MLB Draft.
- The Gators have had at least five draft picks in each of the last three years (2023, 2024, 2025), and in 14 of the last 17 MLB Drafts since 2009.
- Florida has produced six-plus draft picks in three of the last five drafts, including two of the last three (2021, 2023, 2025).
- The Orange & Blue has had at least six draftees in 13 of the last 17 years since 2009.
Peterson is primed to become the 21st first-round pick in program history (27th counting the secondary phase). Should Peterson come off the board in the first-20 selections, he would rank among the five-highest-drafted UF pitchers of all time.
