For the second straight year, Florida captured the NCAA Championship, outscoring Texas and Stanford in a down-to-the-wire meet. The final event - the 400-yard freestyle relay - again proved to be the deciding race as the Gator team of Geoff Gaberino, Albert Mestre, Duffy Dillon and Mike Heath finished second with a time of 2:54.22 to secure the team title.

Florida displayed superlative depth, winning just one individual title and one relay event, yet having 15 athletes score in 12 finals and seven consolation finals.

Heath captured the 200 free with a pool record time of 1:34.94, while the 800 free relay consisting of Gaberino, Mestre, Dillon and Heath won the event with a time of 6:21.29, surpassing the NCAA record set by UF in 1983 - a mark which still stands.

Fourteen Gators earned 35 All-America honors, while Head Coach Randy Reese was honored as the NCAA Men's Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. The NCAA title followed the Gators second-straight Southeastern Conference title and a 9-1 dual meet record for the 1983-83 season.
