Cannon Gibbs

Cannon Gibbs enters his third season with the Gators after being hired in the role of quality control - inside linebackers prior to the 2023 season. 

He arrived to Florida after spending last season (2022) as a graduate assistant coach working with the secondary at Southern Mississippi under current Gators defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong. Last year, the Eagles' defense ranked third nationally in tackles for loss per game (8.3), fifth in sacks (3.38) and seventh in interceptions (17). USM was also third in fourth down conversion defense (.231).  

Prior to his season at Southern Miss, Gibbs spent two years (2019-20) at Delta State as a graduate assistant coach assisting the linebackers. In his first season, the Statesmen defense led the Golf South Conference in total defense (309.2 ypg./29th NCAA), rush defense (122.0 ypg./36th NCAA) and sacks per game (2.70). DSU also ranked second in red zone Defense (.714/38th NCAA).  Additionally, linebackers Vada King and Marvin Terry earned All-Gulf South Conference honors.

He joined the coaching ranks after playing two seasons (2017-18) at East Carolina where he appeared in all 23 games with 10 total starts and was a team captain his senior year as inside linebacker. He finished with 93 total tackles (43 solo), 9.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, two pass breakups, an interception and a quarterback hurry. Had a career-high 14 tackles (8 solo) against UConn his first season for the Pirates. 

Gibbs transferred two the Eagles before spending two seasons (2015-16) at Jones Junior College. He led the Bobcats with 68 tackles (40 solo), 11.0 TFLS and 6.0 sacks in his second season and was a First-Team MAJC (Mississippi Association of Junior and Community Colleges) selection.

A native of Brandon, Miss., he earned his bachelor’s in business administration in 2019 and then masters of sport management a year later, both from East Carolina University.
