GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 16 University of Florida gymnastics team won the Gatorade SEC Showcase by defeating Kentucky 193.60-189.025 Friday evening in front of a Stephen C. O'Connell Center crowd of 3,139. The win ups the Gators' season record to 2-1, while Kentucky opens its 1999 season 0-1.
The Gators showed much improvement over their season-opening performance of a week ago, bettering that score by more than three points. Four different Gators shared the evening's event titles, as senior Susan Hines, the two-time defending NCAA vault champion, won that event title with a mark of 9.90. She also claimed the evening balance beam crown with a mark of 9.85. Sophomore Gabby Fuchs led a Gator sweep of the evening's uneven bars finishers, winning the event with a mark of 9.80. Freshman Lisa Geckle claimed the first event title of her promising Gator career Friday, winning the floor exercise at 9.875. Junior Chrissy Van Fleet claimed her second all-around title of the season Friday, posting a total of 38.55. Friday's title was the seventh all-around crown of Van Fleet's collegiate career.
The Gators now begin a difficult stretch of their schedule, as UF meets the nation's current top four teams over the course of the next four competitions. Next up, Florida meets No. 1 and defending NCAA champion Georgia in Athens, Ga., on Friday, Jan. 22. The UF-UGA meet will be shown tape-delayed on ESPN on Jan. 29 at 4 p.m.
