The ninth-ranked Florida Lady Gators (18-2, 6-1 SEC) won their fifth straight and improved to 9-0 at home in defeating the fifth-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs (18-4, 6-2 SEC) 75-64 in front of a Stephen C. O'Connell Center crowd of 3,203 Thursday night. Florida was led by junior guard Brandi McCain (Silsbee, Tex./Silsbee) with 21 points, three assists and four steals in 40 minutes of action. The victory, which was UF's 15th consecutive home win, tied the program record for the highest-ranked team the Lady Gators have defeated.
"It was a great game for a lot of reasons," Florida head coach Carol Ross said. "The biggest reason is defending our home court and staying in the race (for the SEC title). We will enjoy it all night, but in our league you have to be able to get back on the horse because the Commodores are coming to town on Sunday."
The Lady Gators controlled the entire first half, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. They would lead by as much as 15 points in the first period of play, led by McCain, as she scored 16 points in the first half. The Lady Gators took a 10-point lead into halftime at 37-27.
Florida led by as much as 16 points in the second half at 61-45 at the 9:40 mark in the game. Georgia used a 15-5 run to cut the lead to six points at 66-60 with under four minutes to play. The Lady Gators used some tough defense and timely rebounding to pull away for the 11-point victory and end their six-game losing streak against the Lady Bulldogs.
The game marks the 22nd time the Lady Gators have upset a higher ranked opponent under head coach Carol Ross. It was the third upset of a higher ranked team this season by the Lady Gators.
Junior forward Naomi Mobley (Jacksonville, Fla./Ed White) scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, registering her ninth double double of the season and 23rd of her career. Tamara Stocks (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) and Tombi Bell (Miami/Norland) added 10 points apiece.
Georgia was led by Kelly Miller with 17 points and Coco Miller with 16 points. Tawana McDonald also scored 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
"They outplayed us in every way you can," Georgia head coach Andy Landers said. "They out rebounded us, out performed us and out executed us. They were truly a better team than us tonight."
Florida will be back in action Sunday, Feb. 4, when it hosts Vanderbilt. The game is set for a 5 p.m. tip off.
