Swim & Dive Teams Second After Day Three Of SECs

The University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams broke three school records Friday and are both in second place going into the final day at the 2003 SEC Championships held at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center in Auburn, Ala.
"On the women's side we couldn't swim much better than we did today," head coach Gregg Troy said. "The women showed a lot of pride after having some misfortunes in the first half of the meet."
"The men stood up very well. Ryan Lochte swam awesome for a freshman and Adam Sioui continues to improve."
The men's team saw three individuals crowned SEC Champions on the night. Freshman Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) started the third night of finals competition by winning the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:43.31, a full four seconds better than the NCAA automatic qualifying standard. The amazing thing about his victory was the fact that Lochte's goggles broke right before the beginning of the race.
"It feels great to win the 400 IM after finishing second in the 200 IM last night," Lochte said. "My goggles were bothering me before we started, but I just focused on the race and didn't think about them."
In addition to Lochte, three Gators finished one-two-three in the consolation finals of the event. Freshman Mac Warren (Palm Beach, Fla.) finished first in a time of 3:52.41, while fellow freshman Brian Hartley (Indianapolis, Ind.) came in second with a mark of 3:52.48. Sophomore Jan Wolfgarten (Frankfurt, Germany) took third in the consolation bracket with a time of 3:53.82.
Sophomore Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) successfully defended his title in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:34.58. Following his conference title in the event last season, Sioui went on to win the NCAA title in the 200 Free. Junior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) finished third in the event with a time of 1:36.62. Sophomore Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) took 10th in the consolation finals with a time of 1:37.65, while junior Scott Schultz finished 13th in a time of 1:38.76.
"It feels great to come out here and win this event for the second year in a row," Sioui said. "I've been slowed a little bit by injuries, but I have come back from that and have been swimming pretty well lately."
Fellow sophomore Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) was crowned SEC Champion in the first individual event of his career, as he won the 100-yard backstroke with a new school record of 46.80. Martin Zubero held the record of 47.23 since 1991. Mangabeira shook off a false start that haulted the race and returned to win it. The time was also good enough to meet a NCAA automatic qualifying standard. Teammate and defending SEC champion in the event, Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), finished fourth in a time of 48.01. Sophomore Claudio Ulrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) took seventh in a time of 48.79.
"The false start messed me up," Mangabeira said. "I just focused in on the race and swam hard. This is my first SEC individual championship and that feels awesome."
Sophomore Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) followed up his SEC title in the one-meter springboard dive with a fifth place finish in the three-meter dive with a score of 533.75. The Gators' 400-yard medley relay team took second with a time of 3:13.49. The team of Kellam, Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.), Sioui and Jayme, improved upon their fourth place finish in the event from a year ago.
The top finisher for the women's team was junior Sara McLarty (Deland, Fla.) as she finished runner up to four-time SEC Champion Maggie Bowen in the 400-yard individual medley with a career best time of 4:11.43. Bowen broke the SEC record of 4:07.75, held by former Gator Tracy Caulkins since 1984. Freshman Jamie Reid (Orlando, Fla.) swam an automatic, season best time of 4:13.59 to finish third finished third. Sophomore Meredith Green (Chapel Hill, N.C.) placed fifth in 4:17.88 and freshman Danielle Duncan (Overland Park, Kan.) finished seventh in 4:19.62.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Herfeld, Germany) who broke the school record in the prelims earlier today with a time of 1:00.24, finished fourth with a time of 1:00.76. The 100-yard breast record of 1:01.37 was previously held by Caulkins in 1984 and Stephanie Zunich in 1990.
Duncan also finished sixth in the event with a time of 1:02.31.
Senior Renate duPlessis (Capetown, South Africa) finished third in the 100-yard butterfly with an automatic time of 53.22. That time marks the third highest in the country this year. Senior Cara Teague (Sugar Land, Texas) and sophomore Rebecca Harper (Richmond, Va.) finished seventh and eighth with times of 54.34 and 54.64, respectively.
Junior Chantal Gibney (Dublin, Ireland) placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:47.69.
In the 100-yard backstroke, three Gators scored in the championship finals as sophomore Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) finished third with an automatic qualifying time of 54.38. Reid and duPlessis both tied for fourth with automatic times of 54.38.
The 400-yard medley relay team of Farrell, Bernhardt, duPlessis and Gibney closed out the night with a school record, third-place time of 3:36.63. The record had been held since 1994.
