Men's Golf Moves into Tie for 13th-Place at NCAA Championships
Friday, June 3, 2005 | Men's Golf
The University of Florida men's golf team had another challenging day at the 2005 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. The Gators fired an 11-over par second round score of 291 to bring their team total to 580 (+20) for the tournament. The University of Georgia continues to lead the field as the Bulldogs currently sit at two-under par through 36 holes.
"All around it was not a real good day for us," Head Coach Buddy Alexander said. "We got off to a good start and then hit a few holes where we struggled. Once we got past those holes I thought we were playing better and heading in the right direction, but then we had two double bogies on the final hole. So all-in-all it was a frustrating day."
The duo of Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) led the Gators during round two, as the pair finished the day with a one-over par score of 71. By carding a 71, Stegmaier matched his best round on the Caves Valley Country Club Course. The duo sits at five-over par with two rounds left to play in the tournament.
"Matt and Brett had a solid but not spectacular day," Alexander said. "They played pretty well and made some good shots today when they had to."
Redshirt senior Richard Treis (Baden-Baden, Germany) wasn't far behind his teammates, as he finished the day with a two-over par score of 72. After 36 holes, Treis sits at six-over par with a score of 146.
"I thought Richard battled real well for us today," Alexander said. "He hung in there and made some tough shots."
Having the most challenging day for the Gators was junior James Vargas (Miami, Fla.). Entering the round tied for fourth-place overall, Vargas recorded a seven-over par round of 77 to close out the second round with a total tournament score of 144 (+4).
Competing in his first career NCAA Championships, redshirt freshman Manuel Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) added a nine-over par round of 79 to go with his five-over par opening round score of 75. The Colombian native owns a total tournament score of 154 (+14).
"I still believe that we have two good rounds of golf in us," Alexander said. "We are in need of a good round tomorrow and hopefully that will get us back into the tournament. At this point we can't worry what anyone else does, we just need to focus on our game and play well. There's no reason to be down because there still is time to make a move and I know we are capable of playing much better than these last two days."
The 2005 NCAA Men's Golf Championships continue tomorrow through Saturday at the Caves Valley Country Club. Third round highlights can be seen on The Golf Channel from 3-5 p.m. Live scoring and daily updates can be found at www.GatorZone.com.
