Florida Men’s Golf Tied for Ninth After Opening Round of Tavistock Collegiate Invitational
Sunday, October 19, 2014 | Men's Golf
The Florida men's golf team shot a season-best round of 1-under 287 to tie for ninth place in the opening round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational Sunday.
The Gators were led by senior J.D. Tomlinson, whose 4-under 68 earned him a top-10 spot among the 75-player field. The Gainesville native shot the lowest round for the Orange and Blue this fall, highlighted by an eagle on the ninth hole, as well as three birdies. Fellow senior Thomas Stewart also had an under-par performance, recording three birdies to finish the day with a 1-under 71. Senior Eric Banks turned in his best round of the fall with a 1-over-73, while freshman Ryan Celano had four of his team-high five birdies on the back nine and is at 3-over-75 along with junior A.J. Crouch.
Co-host Texas Tech leads the tournament field with a 21-under 267. The Red Raiders sit atop both the team and player leaderboards, as Guillermo Pereira, who shot a 9-under 63, holds the top position in the individual contest.
The Gators return to Lake Nona Golf & Country Club Monday for the second round of competition, which tees off at 8 a.m.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On the team's performance in Round 1:
“I was really pretty happy. Obviously, our two seniors, J.D. (Tomlinson) and Thomas (Stewart), stepped up. We got two huge under-par rounds out of both of them. That's why we picked Thomas to come. I knew he was ready to help the team, and they both did that today, so I was proud of both of them.”
On Ryan Celano finishing the first round well after a rough start:
“He just had a terrible start and there were a couple of things that were off in his fundamentals, but he kept his attitude strong, and on his last eight holes, he was 4-under. That showed a lot of toughness. I was proud of him for that and I expect a great tournament out of him the next few days.”
On his expectations entering the second round:
“I want us to keep playing solid and for the guys to keep doing the same thing. I think all of them had some bright spots today, and if we could grow on those, we'll be good. I was proud of them.”
