Gators Place Three in Top-10 at Desert Mountain Intercollegiate
Saturday, March 7, 2015 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The University of Florida men's golf team landed three Gators in the top-10 at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate on its way to claiming fourth place in the team competition Saturday.
UF shot a 1-under 287 in the final round to total a tournament score of 10-over 874. J.D. Tomlinson remained consistent, shooting even-par to wrap up the tournament with a 1-under 215 which earned him a sixth place finish in the individual competition.
Alejandro Tosti shot the Gators' best round of the day, firing a 69 to move eight spots up the leaderboard and share 10th place with teammate A.J. Crouch. The pair finished the event with 2-over 218s.
Oregon won the tournament by 12 strokes, finishing with a 3-under 861. The Ducks' Aaron Wise posted three straight rounds of 69 to take the individual crown, recording a 9-under 207.
The Gators return to action in less than a week, when they compete at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla. from March 13-15. Florida State will host the event at the SouthWood Golf Club.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On the team's performance Saturday:
“This was definitely the lowest point since that first tournament back in the fall. We had some guys that put some decent rounds together today, and I think the majority of them let it slip at the end. Championship teams just don't do that. We've got to get back to Gainesville and work hard before these next two tournaments.”
On freshman Alejandro Tosti:
“I actually walked all 18 holes with him today and he's really close to playing some big-time rounds. Today was a step in the right direction. It was his first round in the 60s since he started playing here, so that was good. But, he has a lot more in the tank than that. I think we're just scratching the surface with where his talent can go.”
On the takeaways from the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate:
“I left the course with a sick feeling after the way we finished. It's hard to put in all the time and to come all the way out here across the country and to finish the last three holes like that. As a golfer, it just leaves you sick. We have to suck it up and realize that it's unacceptable. We need to get back to school and get to work so it doesn't happen again.”
