Orr and Tomlinson Lead Florida to Tie for Sixth on Opening Day of NCAA Championship
Saturday, May 30, 2015 | Men's Golf
Ryan Orr and J.D. Tomlinson both fired rounds of 2-under 70 to propel the 29th-seeded University of Florida men's golf team into a tie for sixth place on the opening day of NCAA Championship play.
Orr's score of 70 matched his second-best round of the year, while Tomlinson completed the first round without a bogey. The pair is tied for fifth place and only two strokes off of the lead.
Eric Banks finished the day +4 (76), while Ryan Celano posted a 5-over 77. A.J. Crouch also posted a +5 (77), highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 third hole.
As a team, Florida shot +5 (293), while Illinois leads the field with a score of 2-under 286. On the individual side, South Florida's Claudio Correa and Illinois' Thomas Detry both recorded 4-under 68s to tie for first.
The Gators tee off Round 2 of the NCAA Championship at The Concession Golf Club at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday will consist of another round before the field is cut to the top-15 teams and top nine individuals on non-advancing teams for the final day of stroke play on Monday. The individual 72-hole stroke-play champion will be crowned at the conclusion on Monday's round, and the top eight teams will advance to match play to determine the team champion.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On the Gators' performance on day one:
“I think we had a pretty good day. Obviously, Ryan Orr and J.D. (Tomlinson) shooting those 2-under par 70 rounds are huge for us. We just have to get those three, four and five guys to be a little closer to par, and we would have been right there with the leaders, but I think it's a good start. The guys were a little anxious to get going, so I'm glad we're into it. We just have to get to work now.”
On J.D. Tomlinson's consistency:
“He's just amazing, he continues to amaze me and he keeps showing how ready he is for the next level. Obviously, we're glad to have him here at his last tournament, but every round he shows why he's ready to be a professional, and he really played like a professional today. Not making a bogey on a championship course with greens that are running like that is so impressive. I'm happy for him, and I'm really expecting the same to continue the rest of the week.”
