Florida Aims to Improve in Round 3 of NCAA Championship
Sunday, May 31, 2015 | Men's Golf
The University of Florida men's golf team carded a 21-over 309 in Round 2 of the NCAA Championship on Saturday. The Gators' total of +26 (602) places them in 23rd entering the third round.
Ryan Orr shot a team-best 3-over 75 at The Concession Golf Club on Saturday, marking the sophomore's third-straight round as the lowest-scoring Gator. With a total of 1-over 145, he's tied for 22nd.
Ryan Celano was 2-over par entering the final hole, but a triple bogey on 18 put him at +5 (77) for the day. He birdied four holes in the round and enters Sunday with a total of 10-over 154.
J.D. Tomlinson got off to a rough start but finished strong, with a birdie on the 17th hole. He recorded an 8-over 80 and is +6 (150).
A.J. Crouch posted a 6-over 78, while Eric Banks shot +7 (79). Both have a total score of 11-over 155.
The Gators tee off Round 3 of the NCAA Championship at 7 a.m. on Sunday. After the day's round, the field will be cut to the top-15 teams and top-nine individuals on non-advancing teams for the final day of stroke play on Monday. The individual 72-hole stroke-play champion will be crowned at the conclusion on Monday's round, and the top eight teams will advance to match play to determine the team champion.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On Round 2:
“I think today was really my fault, to be honest. We hadn't had a day when we played so late, and I just didn't get them prepared well in the morning. It's my fault, and I'll learn, being a first-year head coach. We'll get better, but today's definitely on me.”
On Ryan Orr's team-best score in Round 2:
“He's playing great and his attitude is amazing. He's always had the talent, but I think he's really starting to see that he can play at this level and play with anyone. I'm looking for him to come out and play well tomorrow and really be a leader for us next year.”
On freshman Ryan Celano:
“It's a great experience for him. I'm broken-hearted for him that he made that triple bogey on 18 because I think he really grinded and fought a good round today, and to give it away on 18 hurts. I know how he feels, but we'll go get a nice dinner and we'll come out firing tomorrow.”
