Monday, March 7, 2016 | Men's Golf
LAS VEGAS – University of Florida freshman golfer Sam Horsfield fired a 3-under 69 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Monday to earn a share of the lead. As a team, the Gators are in seventh place after shooting +7 (295) in Round 1.
Horsfield collected five birdies on Monday, including three in a four-hole stretch on holes 11-14. He's tied with UNLV's Taylor Montgomery and Arizona State's Jon Rahm entering Round 2.
After day one, it's tight at the top of the leaderboard, with three golfers tied for first (-3), four tied for fourth (-2), two for eighth (-1) and six tied for 10th (even par).
Four strokes back from the leaders is freshman Jorge Garcia, who carded a 1-over 73 to join the group of seven tied for 15th. His round was highlighted by his first collegiate ace on the 162-yard eighth hole.
Checking in at +3 (75) was freshman Kyler Tate. Junior Ryan Orr shot +6 (78), while sophomore Alejandro Tosti was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
Arizona State leads the team contest with a +3 (291). Four strokes back, Florida aims to improve in the standings when it returns to the Southern Highlands Golf Club on Tuesday for Round 2. The Gators begin teeing off at 8 a.m. P.T.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On Round 1:
"It was a really tough day. It was cold and windy, and the greens are really firm. The course is just in absolute championship condition. It tests all parts of your game, and especially your patience and mentality. For the most part, I thought we did a really good job hanging in there. I was really, really happy with Kyler Tate's finish. He finished par-par-birdie to really help the team, and Jorge Garcia had an up-and-down day, but the hole-in-one was amazing. It was really cool to be there for that. Obviously Sam Horsfield was just outstanding again. There were a lot of positives, and we still have two more days left."
On competing against highly ranked teams:
"It's a great test. We wanted to be at this tournament so badly because we're on a great, hard golf course with the best teams. It really shows us where we stack up. I think we're right there. We have some really special kids who, when the lights come on for the tournament, they show up. I like to call them 'gamers' when they do that. It's pretty special to be around these guys. They really get up for the big events and believe in themselves, and it's fun to watch."
