DALTON, Ga. – The University of Florida men's golf team saw three players shoot even-par or better Sunday in the final round of the Carpet Capital Classic in Dalton, Ga. The Gators totaled 287 strokes, besting last season's second round by nine shots. The overall score of -8 (856) was 43 strokes better than last year's performance and placed the team in a tie for fifth in the final results.
Sophomores Sam Horsfield and Jorge Garcia both had solid days on the course, shooting -1 (71). The score allowed Horsfield to finish (-8) for the tournament, putting him in a tie for sixth, while Garcia finished (+2) for the tournament, tied for 30th.
Sophomore Gordon Neale shot an even-par 72 to stay at (-4) for the tournament, finishing with sole possession of 17th place.
The University of Virginia went wire-to-wire, winning the tournament with a final team score of -31 (833). Their final score gave them a six-stroke advantage over second-place finishers Auburn, who carded a -25 (839). Georgia Tech's Luke Schniederjans claimed the individual medal with a final score of -11 (205).
Head Coach J.C. Deacon on final round play:
"The guys were much better with their poise today. Sam (Horsfield) hung in there, Gordon (Neale) did the best with what he had and Jorge Garcia had a phenomenal back nine to really help the team, but we were defeated by quite a few shots, so we've got to get home and get back to work and figure out how to get better."
On the 43-stroke improvement from last year and what that says about the team:
"The course was definitely playing much easier this year. They hadn't had much rain, so the course was firmer and the conditions were a little bit easier, but I've got really high hopes for this team and I know each player on our team has really high hopes for us. Our goals are high and that's where our work ethic needs to be, too. It's going to take some time, but we can really get this thing going."
On positives from this tournament going forward:
"There were some very tough but very necessary lessons learned this week both on and off the course. It wasn't an ideal weekend for us as a group, but I think we learned a lot of the tough lessons that are going to help us going down the line."
