Saturday, April 1, 2017 | Men's Golf
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Florida's men's golf team improved on its first-round score Saturday, shooting a nine-under 275 in the second round of the Mason Rudolph Championship. That score put the Gators in second place at 551 (-17).
All five of the players in the lineup shot even-par or better in the second round and for the second day in a row four members of the Orange and Blue carded four or more birdies.
Sophomore Sam Horsfield and freshman Andy Zhang followed up their 69s (-2) in the first round with 67s (-4) in the second round. Both Gators carded six birdies on day two and head into round three tied for first place with Alabama's Josh Sedeno at 136 (-6).
After shooting a 272 (-12) in the second round, Alabama leads the team leaderboard at 550 (-18).
The Gators are back in action tomorrow at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tennessee, for round three at 9:40 a.m.
Head Coach J.C. Deacon
On his team's performance in the second round:
"We had an outstanding finish that's given us the chance to be right in the hunt for the trophy tomorrow. I'm really proud of the way the guys hung in there and gave a really consistent effort. We had two really good rounds from Andy Zhang and Sam Horsfield today and the rest of the guys contributed, too, so it was a really fun day."
On the play of Andy Zhang and Sam Horsfield:
"They had very different rounds. Sam was just good from the start, birdied the first hole and never looked back. Andy was a little more up and down all day, but two birdies to close 17 and 18 were huge for the team and that's what he's capable of doing. It was nice to see him finish off a good round."
On what the team needs to do in round three to win the tournament:
"Our finish today sets up an awesome day with Vanderbilt and Alabama tomorrow. They are two classy programs who do it the right way and it's going to take our best effort to win tomorrow. Being in this situation helps us so much going forward and we've been there a bunch of times this year, so I'm expecting us to come out, play our best and hopefully that's good enough to win."
