WEST LAFAYETTE, In. – The Florida's men's golf team made a move in the second round of the West Lafayette Regional on Tuesday. A one-under 287 catapulted the Gators into a tie for third at three-over par for the event.
Sam Horsfield paced UF with five birdies and just one bogey. The round put the sophomore in a tie for 17th at one-over. In addition, senior Ryan Orr also put together a solid performance on Tuesday as he tallied five birdies en route to an even-par 72 and a tie for 17th at one-over as well.
Sophomore Gordon Neale notched four birdies while junior Alejandro Tosti picked up his third eagle of the season on the 10th hole.
New Mexico posted the tournament's best round so far, a six-under 282, taking over the top of the leaderboard at the end of day two. Illinois State's Trent Wallace moved into first place on the individual leaderboard following a second round 68 (-2), putting him at six-under overall.
The Gators are back in action tomorrow at the West Lafayette Regional in West Lafayette, In., for round three at 8:45 a.m. Florida needs to secure a top-five finish to advance to the National Championship Tournament.
Head Coach J.C. Deacon
On his team's performance during the first day:
"We played phenomenal golf for 16 holes. That was probably the best round of the year for the guys through the first 16 holes. We just couldn't finish it off which was really, really sad because the guys put in a lot of work and played great. For Sam Horsfield to be five-under, Ryan Orr to be three-under and Gordon Neale to be two-under through 16 holes today was just fantastic golf in really difficult conditions. We just didn't finish it. Seventeen and 18 were playing really difficult, but you have to find a way to finish off those great rounds and we didn't do it today, but we moved up the leaderboard, so I'm very happy with the day."
On what the team needs to do to clinch a top-five spot and advance:
"We're going to try and win this tournament, that's where our minds are at. We feel like we're the best team here and we want to prove it. It's going to be really windy and challenging again tomorrow, but those are the conditions that we play best in. They guys are playing really good golf and are confident. They just need a couple of putts to go in early and get off to a good start and I think we should make a good run at winning this thing."
