Gators enter final day of stroke play in fifth
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After being tied for 18th after round one of the SEC Tournament, Marta Perez carded a 70 (-2) to leap into a tie for fifth place on the leaderboard.
Perez' second round was the second best score on the course Thursday moving her to just six strokes off the lead entering the final round of stroke play. Her back nine score improved by eight strokes from round one to round two and helped Florida hold the in fifth place.
With the Gators fifth, they are in position to advance to the weekend. The conference tournament has moved to a new format this year in which the top eight teams after stroke play will advance to match play.
Out of the No. 5 spot, Elin Esborn carded a clutch 72 (E) round which included four birdies on the back. Like Perez, the back nine was a different story on day two for Esborn.
After carding a 44 in round one, she cut that by 10 strokes Thursday which included a birdie on the par-5 18th. She is the only Gator to birdie that hole this week.
Joining Perez in the top 20 is Sierra Brooks who is tied for 19th after 36 holes of play and is 6-over-par for the tournament.
The Gators are set to start the final round of stroke play tomorrow at 9:50 when senior Taylor Tomlinson will tee it up. Florida is paired with Georgia and Vanderbilt.

Coach's Take:
On the Gators' second round:
"I think the positive today is that we battled and we got a few strokes back at the end which was huge. It not only was huge for today but, huge for their psyche heading into tomorrow. I told them we knew it was going to be a battle coming in. We did part of the damage to ourselves today but, it is something to learn from and get better with heading into tomorrow and the weekend." - Coach Emily Bastel Glaser
On growing through each experience
"This is a team that every experience we go through is really important because for 85 percent of our roster it is a new experience. It is really important to soak it in and learn from it." - Coach Emily Bastel Glaser
On play of Marta Perez:
"That was a huge round of golf not only because it was a really good round of golf in tough conditions but, for her to see her bounce back from the back nine yesterday. To see Marta come out and bounce back it was really important for her and I'm super proud of her." - Coach Emily Bastel Glaser
On focus entering final day:
"Tomorrow, you have to try and make things a little simpler. I'd like to see us play a little smarter and just to get comfortable as quickly as possible. With the new format, this is a new experience for every team so, everyone will be a little bit on edge tomorrow. It will be about who can get themselves in the right mindset early and keep that throughout." - Coach
