Gators Complete Round One in Tennessee
Sunday, October 25, 2020 | Men's Golf
The Florida men’s golf team shot 7-under par during the first round and currently sit in eighth place in Tennessee.
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Florida men's golf team took the course for the second time this fall as they began competition at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate and currently sit in eighth behind a 7-under par scorecard.
Redshirt sophomore Fred Biondi and freshman Joe Pagdin led the way for the Gators after both turning in cards 3- under par. In Biondi's first competitive collegiate event of the semester, the Brazilian posted a near-perfect scorecard, lacking a bogey until the third to last hole while also turning in four birdies. Pagdin continues to find success in the short game, carding six birdies, and remains a consistent force in the Gators lineup.
Giovanni Manzoni followed behind Biondi and Pagdin, shooting a graceful 2-under par 69 and finishing tied for 21st after the first round.
Ricky Castillo and Tyler Wilkes rounded out the Florida lineup. After a challenging first nine, Castillo locked in and shot 2-under par after the turn to finish tied for 46th individually and 1-over par heading into the second round of competition.
Florida will look to make strides on the leaderboard when they take the course tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET.
Head Coach JC Deacon's Take
On today's scorecard…
"First and foremost, huge thanks to everyone at Vanderbilt and the Legends Club for putting on a great event. The SEC is the best conference in college golf and it's such a great opportunity for our student-athletes to play against SEC competition so often this fall. Raises the bar for all of us. It was very nice to get three guys off to a nice start with scores in the 60s. Ricky and Tyler struggled a little out of the gates, but both hung in there on the back nine. The course was playing pretty easy today. Zero wind, perfect greens, and a ton of wedges for these long hitters."
On improvements…
"We need to be a little sharper out of the gates tomorrow and give ourselves a ton of looks for birdie early on. We have five guys who are playing solid golf and can take it deep at any moment. It's going to be a shootout on this course and we need to be prepared to get after it tomorrow."
