Florida Battles Breezy Conditions in Second Round of SEC Championship
Thursday, April 22, 2021 | Men's Golf
Only one team in the field posted an under-par score in the second round of play.
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Florida men's golf team completed the second day of play at the SEC Championship, posting a 9-over par 289 in the second round and sitting tied for ninth at 15-over par overall.
Alabama was the only SEC team to record a second-round score under par in weather conditions that threatened to pull any ball that was put in the air.
Ricky Castillo posted the low round for the Gators, finishing the day at even par and 2-over overall to sit in a tie for 15th place individually heading into the final round of stroke play. The sophomore recorded four bogeys in the round, but rather than let that damper his focus, Castillo responded to each with a birdie to shoot an even 70.
Joe Pagdin continued his stellar tournament, recording a 2-over par 72. The freshman remains in the top 10 individually, tying for ninth heading into the final round of stroke play.
Fred Biondi took the bounce-back title today after improving his score by six shots compared to the round before. The sophomore carded a 2-over par 72 after a birdie on the final hole lowered his round total.
Yuxin Lin and Tyler Wilkes rounded out the Gators lineup, shooting 5-over par on the round and 8-over par overall to tie for 51st with one day of stroke play remaining.
Florida will head back to the course tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. ET looking to move up the leaderboard. The top eight teams from tomorrow's final round of stroke play will make the cut and move on to match play, beginning Saturday, April 24.
Head Coach JC Deacon's Take
On the round today…
"It was tough early on with the cold and wind and I thought we hung in there. It was hard to make birdies. Our guys fought for each other and every single shot today."
On the stakes tomorrow…
"The most fun part of college golf is the big days like tomorrow. Where so much is on the line. You have an opportunity to come together and play hard for your teammates, play hard for the Florida Gators. Tomorrow is such a great opportunity to play our best golf when it matters most. I know everyone on this team is really excited for the chance to go get it."
