The Breakdown
About the Tigers: It's their fourth season under Dennis Gates, who in his first three sandwiched 25- and 22-win campaigns that ended in the NCAA Tournament around an 8-24 clunker in '23-24 that ended with an historic 0-18 record in SEC play. ... They have 10 victories, but the strength of schedule and quality of wins is unimpressive. Missouri's NET rating of 94 is the third-worst in the league, ahead of only Mississippi State and South Carolina, who check in at 103 and 104, respectively. The Tigers' best win to date came against Minnesota, which is currently 110th in the NET. The other nine wins are against opponents rated 219th or worse. ... Mizzou averaged 93.0 points through its first six games, but 75.7 since while dealing with availability issues from a trio of guys Gates was banking on: 6-10 forward Trent Pierce (starter last season, has not played in '25-26); 6-11 forward Jevon Porter (missed Illinois game); guard Jayden Stone (41.7% from 3). The status of all three for this one is uncertain. ... Missouri boasts a top-50 offense and ranks 15th in the country at 60.7% from the 2-point area, but the Tigers have not been a great defensive team, especially when it comes to defending the 3-point line (304th). Will the Gators' poor long-range shooters be able to take advantage? ... Mizzou was awful in the loss to Illinois. The Tigers hit just 16 of 56 shots (28.6%), allowed the Illini to make 30 of 55 (54.5%), including 15 of 33 from the arc (45.4%) and got smashed on the glass 38-24. ... Forward Mark Mitchell, who started his career at Duke, has scored in double figures 10 straight games and has hit 22 points in at least half of those. He's shooting 64.7% inside the arc and is among the nation's best players at drawing fouls. ... Fifth-year guard Jacob Crews leads the SEC in 3-point shooting percentage at 51.4, having sank 38 of 74. He has five games with at least four 3s. ... Center Shawn Phillips, a transfer from Arizona State, is at 68.4% on the season and has yet to make a 3. If he has the ball in close, the Gators will foul him. He's a 45.5% free-throw shooter.
Numbers of Note
* plus-17.2 — UF's rebounding margin, which leads the nation by almost two per game. The Gators also remain the No. 2 offensive rebounding team in the country at 44.7%.
* 2013 — The year the Florida played its first conference game at Missouri. The date was Feb. 19 and the Tigers, who'd been embarrassed by 31 one month earlier in Gainesville, got a go-ahead 15-foot jumper from Laurence Bowers with 1:15 to play and closed out the fifth-ranked Gators for a 63-60 victory at sold-out Mizzou Arena. UF, which led for the first 37 minutes, had a 13-point lead in the final 10 minutes, but saw it whittled away in good part because of too many 3-point attempts (33 vs. 21 attempts from 2) and too few makes (10). Bowers finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. UF got 14 points from Mike Rosario, who missed a game-tying 3 in the finals seconds.
Bottom Line
After this Quad 2 opportunity, the Gators are looking at four consecutive Q1 games. UF is just 1-4 in Q1 chances this season, with the lone win coming against Miami.Email senior writer Chris Harry at chrish@gators.ufl.edu. Find his story archives here.
