GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The SEC announced today that India Houghton is the conference women's tennis player of the week and Lucie Pawlak is the co-freshman women's tennis player of the week for matches played from Feb. 24-March 2.
Houghton went undefeated last week, picking up a 7-5, 6-2 win Saturday, Feb. 28 over the No. 18 singles player in the country in Oklahoma's Julia Garcia Ruiz, helping the Gators to a 4-3 win over the No. 11 Sooners. Two days prior, she beat Arkansas' Brooke Schafer, 6-4, 6-2 in Florida's 4-0 sweep of the Razorbacks. Both wins came at number two singles, where Houghton is now 3-1 on the season.
Lucie Pawlak played the match of the day, Saturday, as she clinched the Gators' 4-3 victory over No. 11 Oklahoma with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Salakthip Ounmuang at number five singles. The Montpellier, France native broke Ounmuang in the third set to clinch the match. Two days prior, Pawlak bested Arkansas' Jimena Gomez Alonso, 6-3, 6-1, also in the fifth slot, to help Florida blank the No. 60 Razorbacks, 4-0.
On the doubles side of the ledger, Pawlak and Houghton teamed up at number three to beat Arkansas' Alexan Panagiotidou and Arina Babenko, 6-4. That same Florida duo was leading 5-4 over Ounmuang and Julia Garcia Ruiz when the Sooners clinched the doubles point.
The No. 23 Gators (7-2, 2-1) put their three-match winning streak on the line this week as the Gators travel to No. 4 LSU (8-3, 1-2) on Thursday, March 5 for a 6 p.m. EST start, and No. 31 Ole Miss (6-3, 1-2) on Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m.
