Gators Start Season Strong With First Place Finishes at Stan Sims XC Opener

The Men, led by Ian Sanchez Lopez, finished first with 33 points, as the Women, led by Isobelle Jones, totaled 24 points and a first place finish
KENNESAW, Ga. – Florida Men's and Women's Cross Country opened their 2026 season with a strong showing at the Stan Sim XC Opener. The Men (four-mile race) and Women (5k race) each grabbed first-place team finishes with 33 and 24 points respectively.
The Men's four-mile race started the morning for the Gators and Ian Sanchez Lopez, in his debut as a Gator, finished first for the team with a time of 19:32.0, good for a third place finish. Jonathan Leon followed closely behind with a fifth place finish at 19:33.5. Strong performances from Geofrey Ronoh (6), Josh Ruiz (7), and Riley Novack (12) helped the Gator men secure a first place finish with 33 points
The women were led by Isobelle Jones, who took first place in the 5k race with a time of 17:58.0, as freshman Maggie McCormick finished third in her Gator debut with a time 18:04.2. The Gator's top five was rounded out by Keeghan Edwards (5), freshman Jazlyn Forbes (6), and Ashley Fitzgerald (9), good for a first place finish with 24 points. Freshman Mary Nesmith also had a strong day, finishing 12th in her collegiate debut with a time 18:36.7.

Gators Cross Country will travel up to Terre Haute, Ind. on Sept. 19 for the John McNichols Invitational hosted by Indiana State.
