Women's Golf Second at Florida Women's Collegiate

The University of Florida women's golf team finished second in the final round of the 2002 Ryder/Florida Women's Collegiate Golf Championship Sunday, shooting a 911. The Gators finished 11 strokes behind Florida State, which won the tournament with a three-round 900.
"I'm disappointed with the outcome. We've worked hard all year; however, this is not the end of the world. We're going to learn from it, move forward and keep working hard," said Head Coach Jill Briles-Hinton. "I think what's important to understand is that we are so close to getting to the next level. We can play at the next level, but we're not quite there yet. If we were at that level, we would have been able to handle the conditions and the pressures of the situation and pull out a victory."
"Just because we finished second doesn't mean we have to go back to the drawing board because this is part of the maturing process. We're going to continue to work towards our goals and push through to the next level."
For the second year in a row, junior Jeanne Cho (Boulogne, France) finished third overall, placing her on the All-State team, which is comprised of the top five finishers from the tournament. Cho shot a 223 (74-73-76) to finish four strokes behind Miami's Camilla Hilland, who won the individual title with a 219. Freshman Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood, Fla.) tied for fifth place - the best finish of her career - with a 225 (76-74-75) and joins Cho on the All-State team.
"I'm thrilled for Jeanne to have another third place finish in the state championship. She has worked hard and she deserves this success," said Briles-Hinton. "I'm also thrilled for Andrea. She wasn't feeling well at the beginning of the week. She fought hard through every round, including her practice round, and in the end, she captured a top five finish, earning her a place on the all-state team."
Freshman Whitney Code (Tampa, Fla.) finished tied for 12th with a 231 (80-71-80). Other individual finishes included junior Brittany Straza (Ft. Myers, Fla.) in a tie for 16th with a 233 (75-76-82) and Amanda Dick (Clearwater, Fla.) in a tie for 33rd with a 241 (80-80-81).
Florida returns to action April 19-21 when the Gators travel back to Athens, Ga., for the 2002 Southeastern Conference Championships, hosted by the University of Georgia.
