Wednesday, May 21, 2003 | Women's Golf
The No. 8 University of Florida women's golf team came up against inclement weather once again, but is currently in fourth place after shooting a 25-over-par 313 at the 2003 NCAA Championships at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. The Lady Gators are only eight strokes out of the lead as Southern California leads the field with a score of 305.
"I thought we played ok today," Head Coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "We left quite a few out there. The conditions were tough and with this type of weather, the scores are going to be high. I think they all left a few out there, but they're going to work on their games and go back out tomorrow and compete."
Florida began today's first round at the 10th hole, birdying a total of nine holes during the round. Freshman standout Aimee Cho (Orlando, Fla.) led the Lady Gators, birdying four holes to finish the first round tied for seventh place, carding a three-over-par 75. Cho birdied three of her last four holes of the day, after starting out slow bogeying hole 11 and then double bogeying on hole 14. Sophomore Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood, Fla.) also had an impressive day, shooting a five-over-par 77 and is currently tied for 18th place.
Senior Brittany Straza (Fort Myers, Fla.) is tied for 47th place, shooting an eight-over-par 80. Junior Amanda Dick (Clearwater, Fla.) shot a nine-over-par 81. Dick made two birdies on holes seven and 15, but bogeyed seven holes, including 12, 13 and 14 to finish the day tied for 64th place. Senior Jeanne Cho (Bradenton, Fla.) shot an 84 to tie for 92nd place.
Florida will tee off in the second group on Wednesday, May 21 as they will begin at 1:10 p.m. Eastern time. The third round of the NCAA Championships will take place Thursday and the final day of competition will be on Friday, May 23. Live scoring of the tournament is available at www.golfstat.com.
