The No. 24 ranked Florida women's golf team finished out its fall season with a 3-2-0 win over Tulane in the consolation final of the NGCA-hosted Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at the Mission Inn Resort. The win over Tulane pushed the Lady Gators to a 3-1 record for the four round tournament, where they also notched victories over Furman and No. 14 ranked Tennessee.
Sophomore captain Tiffany Chudy (Miramar) defeated Tulane's Mary Ellen Jacobs 5 and 4, while Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) notched a win over Kasi Lee by a 4 and 3 margin and Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky) finished her match 1 up over Alison Walshe.
Redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) fell to Jessica Issler 5 and 3, while Liliana Alvarez bested sophomore Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) 5 and 4. Head coach Jill Briles-Hinton was pleased with the effort from the team over the four-day tournament, as well as with the outcome of the fall season as a whole.
“We struggled today,” said Briles-Hinton. “The team was very tired, which is understandable because they played four rounds in three days, not to mention this was our third tournament in a row. We were down quite a bit over the course of the final round, but the girls found a way to win some holes and take control of the match.”
“One thing I see in this team that I haven't seen as much from teams in the past, is that they want to win,” Briles-Hinton continued. “It's a fire in their eyes, you can just tell they want to win and they'll keep fighting until they do.”
With the conclusion of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship the Orange and Blue closed out its fall season, and will not return to competition until it travels to Palos Verdes, Calif., for the Regional Challenge, Feb. 13-15, 2006.
“Overall I think we had a successful fall,” said Briles-Hinton. “After losing a player who was key to our line-up last year, we had Ornella step up and do good things for us this season. We finish the fall with one tournament win, one tournament champion and also a second-place tournament finish. We'll be working hard in the off-season to come back strong for our spring schedule.”
