The Florida women's golf team improved its round two standing from 10th to ninth in Sunday's third and final round of the Mason Rudolph Invitational in Franklin, Tenn. The Lady Gators recorded a score of 910 for the tournament, which featured a stacked field of teams, including 10 top-25 squads.
“Moving up one place today was good,” said head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “I don't want to say it was the best we could have done, but with the weather conditions as bad as they were it was at least an improvement. Everyone on the team was hoping to do better than she did, but they fought hard and at that's really all I can ask, is for them to never stop fighting.”
Freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) proved to be the most consistent among the Lady Gator five, as she fired a 75 in all three rounds of play. Blackwelder finished the tournament with a 225, good for a 23rd-place tie.
“Mallory was fantastic for us this weekend,” said Briles-Hinton. “This was her first collegiate tournament and she performed well, especially for a freshman. She's only going to continue to improve, so that's a positive we can take away from this tournament.”
Sophomore captain Tiffany Chudy (Miramar), posted scores of 75-73-77 to finish with a 225 and tie for 23rd, while sophomore Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany), notched a three-round total of 228 (79-73-76), good for a tie at 30th. Sophomore Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) finished in a tie for 51st, after carding a 233 (73-79-81) for the tournament.
Also competing for the Orange and Blue, senior Tarah McNaughton (Bradenton) posted a three-round total 238, while sophomore Eleanor Tucker (Wilson N.C.) finished the tournament with a score of 241. Briles-Hinton is hopeful this tournament will serve as a starting point for her young Lady Gator squad.
“No one is satisfied with the way this team performed this weekend,” said Briles-Hinton. “It was a mediocre performance and we're not satisfied with mediocre. As a team we've talked about what we need to do to improve, and I'm confident we'll only get better from this point on.”
Duke's Amanda Blumenherst led the Blue Devils to a first place finish in the tournament, as she took medalist honors with a 69-71-68=208 performance. No. 2 Duke posted an 878 to take the title, while No. 4 Georgia finished second with an 881. No. 11 Arkansas took third with an 884, No. 1 UCLA finished fourth with a score of 885 and No. 5 Auburn rounded out the top five with an 889.
The Lady Gators return to the course Oct. 1-2 when they travel to Lexington, Ky., for the Lady Wildcat Invitational.
