The No. 15 University of Florida women's golf team finished in second place at the Lady Buckeye in Columbus, Ohio held at the par 72, 6,177-yard Scarlet Golf Course. Sophomore Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) recorded the lowest three-round score of her Lady Gator career en route to a third-place finish in the individual standings.
Gal fired an even 72 in the third round to follow up her under-par rounds of 71 and 70 during day one of the tourney and finish at three-under. Her three-round total of 213 (72-71-70=213) set a new career-low. Head coach Jill Briles-Hinton was pleased with Gal's performance and confident the sophomore can continue to be a low-shooter for the Lady Gator squad.
“Sandra came into this tournament with the goal of sticking to a routine,” said Briles-Hinton. “She did a nice job of meeting that goal. She did not deviate from her routine, and as a result played well. She needs to build on this tournament and continue to stick with her routine, and if she does that I think she can continue having success in the post-season.”
Redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) and sophomore Eleanor Tucker (Wilson, N.C.) each finished in a tie for 13th. Jouven shot a 75 in the final round (72-74-75=221), while Tucker posted a one-under 71. Each finished with a three-round total of 221, a new career-low for Tucker (72-78-71=221)
Freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) claimed a tie for 29th after notching a 74 in the final round to finish with a three-round total of 225 (74-77-74=225). Sophomore captain Tiffany Chudy (Miramar) rounded out the Lady Gator quintet in a tie for 35th after firing a round-three score of 78 (75-74-78=227).
In the team competition the Florida women combined to card a 876, with a 292 in the final round to overtake Purdue and capture second place. Southeastern Conference foe Auburn took top honors at the tourney, finishing at minus-15 as a team over the three rounds. Purdue took third place, while Kent State and Ohio State finished in fourth and fifth, respectively.
“It was great to come out and overtake Purdue,” said Briles-Hinton. “They had us by a stroke after the second round we shot two better than them today and got the job done. Today was a big confidence-booster for the team; it showed the girls we can play. Now we have to get home, take care of some finals next week and get ready for Regionals. We need to continue to play at this level at Regionals and I'm hopeful the team will peak at the right time in the season.”
