Piccio and Hedberg Fire One-Over Scores to Lead Gator Women On First Day of NCAA Championship
Tuesday, May 21, 2013 | Women's Golf
Competing in its 24th NCAA Championship all-time, the No. 9 University of Florida women's golf completed its first round of play at the 2013 NCAA Championships at the UGA Golf Course with an 11-over (299) to be in a tie for 15th-place heading into the second round.
“It's not the most typical start we wanted,” Florida head coach Emily Bastel said. “Mia (Piccio) and Camill (Hedberg) did play well today, but it was tough finding birdies out there today and I thought they did a good job of staying patient. We'll just need a little bit of help tomorrow from the rest of the team and show the depth that we have. In team golf, you need everybody to come ready to play, especially in the national championship and that's what we'll be looking for tomorrow.”
Only seven birdies found their way onto Gator scorecards as the hilly Georgia golf course didn't yield many birdies for all teams. Former champions, San Jose State and Southern California lead the way after day one with a four-under (284), while SJSU also holds on to the individual leader, Regan De Guzman, who shot a five-under (67), a career-best to lead by two strokes. Along with the Spartans, only three other teams compiled an even par or better team score after the tournament's first day.
Trying to carry over momentum from her top-ten finish at the NCAA Central Regional, senior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) brought in one of the most consistent rounds of the day. Piccio pared 11-straight holes before bogeying the par four, second hole and, for a time, was steady in the top-20 at even par. The senior ended up getting her first birdie on the par four, sixth hole, but scored a bogey on the next hole to drop back to one-over where she finished up to be in a tie for 33rd individually.
Also in a tie for 33rd is sophomore Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain), who carded the best Gator round on Tuesday along with Piccio. Looking to make a statement in only her second NCAA Championship of her collegiate career, Hedberg had a more up-and-down day with four bogeys and three birdies. The Spaniard was two-under after seven holes and in the mix of the top-five, but suffered a bogey right before the turn and then bogeyed two of her first three holes of her second nine.
Hedberg rebounded well to birdie the par five, seventh and nearly birdied the ninth to get back to red numbers. However, the 15-footer for birdie just missed to the left and the comebacker for par lipped out, forcing Hedberg to write down her fourth bogey of the day and drop her to one-over. The round of 73 is still three shots better than her first round at last year's NCAA Championships. Last year after carding a first round 76, Hedberg came back to fire a 69 on the second day. With 14 players tied for sixth at one-under, only two shots separate Hedberg and Piccio from the top-ten.
As for the rest of the UF team, the bottom three players combined for a 17-over score and only had three birdies between them for the first 18 of the week. In her first NCAA Championship of her young collegiate career, freshman Ursa Orehek (Domzale, Slovenia) brought in a four-over (76) to be in a tie for 76th after the first day. Orehek had a slow start to her day with four bogeys after seven holes, but seemed to right the ship after a birdie on the 18th and then another on No. 2 to get back to two-over. The freshman did write down two more bogeys on her second nine, but was able to minimize the damage to finish at four-over.
Junior Elcin Ulu (Istanbul, Turkey) and sophomore Anna Young (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) have some work to do after their first rounds as Ulu shot a five-over (77), while young had the high score of the day for the Gators with an eight-over (80). Ulu finished in a tie for 89th and Young is in a tie for 116th going into round two.
The first tee times of Wednesday's second round are scheduled for 7:33 a.m., while Florida's first player will tee off at 8:28 a.m. on the first hole of the UGA Golf Course.
