Gators Extend Lead at Tavistock Collegiate
Monday, October 17, 2016 | Men's Golf
WINDERMERE, Fla. – The University of Florida men's golf team had three players shoot under-par en route to an -11 (277) Monday in the second round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. The score was Florida's lowest to-par this season and gave the team a nine-stroke separation between them and second place at the end of day two.
Junior Alejandro Tosti shot a tournament-best -7 (65), carding seven birdies and an eagle in the effort. The score pushed him to -9 overall and into sole possession of the lead with a two-stroke buffer.
In his second tournament as a Gator, freshman Andy Zhang picked up five birdies on his way to a -3 (69), putting him back at even-par for the tournament. Sophomores Sam Horsfield and Gordon Neale shot even-par and one-under, respectively.
Associate Head Coach John Handrigan
(on the play of Alejandro Tosti)
"In our team meeting last night, Jorge Garcia said that on any given day, any one of our players can shoot a 65 or lower, and Alejandro (Tosti) obviously went out and did that today and that carried us to a very good round of golf. When he faced adversity today, he handled it as we thought he would, as a Gator. Today, when he had back-to-back bogeys and faced adversity, he handled it well and I was very proud of him for that."
(on the team's performance)
"It's a great feeling (having the lead) going into tomorrow. Tomorrow, we're going to play hard for Pete Fox (a Florida alum who has been a great supporter to the program for the past couple of years.). Coach Deacon missed part of the day because he was going to a dinner for Pete Fox. He's not doing too well in his fight with cancer, so we're going to go out and play hard for Pete tomorrow."
