Gators Open NCAA Play at Kohler Regional
Sunday, May 15, 2016 | Men's Golf
KOHLER, Wis. – The No. 7 University of Florida men's golf team will look to secure a spot in the NCAA Championship when it tees off the NCAA Kohler Regional Championship on Monday. The top five squads from the 13-team field will advance to the national championship.
The third-seeded Gators are coming off a tie for third place at the SEC Championship last month. Individually, freshmen Sam Horsfield and Gordon Neale enter competition at Blackwolf Run Meadow Valleys Course fresh off of back-to-back top-five finishes, with Horsfield and Neale placing first and second, respectively, at the Mason Rudolph Championship to close the regular season before tying for fifth and finishing fourth, respectively, at the conference championship. The duo will sit atop the UF lineup, with Horsfield playing No. 1 and Neale competing in the second position.
Sophomore Alejandro Tosti, who picked up his fifth top-20 finish at the SEC Championship, will play in the No. 3 position. Freshman Jorge Garcia will continue his streak of competing in every event for the Gators this year, as he'll play in the fourth spot, while junior Ryan Orr, also with five top-20 finishes, will play in the final lineup spot.
The Orange and Blue has won the NCAA Regional Championship five times since regional play was introduced in 1989, most recently claiming the title in 2011. Four Gators have earned five medalist honors during that time, with Billy Horschel last winning the NCAA Regional Championship in 2006 and 2007. The Gators have gone on to advance to the NCAA Championship every year but two in 27 years of regional play.
The NCAA Kohler Regional features 13 teams and 10 individuals and is one of six regional contests held this week. The top five teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, as well as the top individual from each regional not on an advancing team. The University of Oregon will host the national championship, which will be held May 27-June 1 at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

On his thoughts entering the NCAA Regional Championship:
"We just have to go take care of our business. We're not really worried about anyone else or who is at our regional. We got assigned to Wisconsin. We're really excited about it. It's somewhere I haven't been and a lot of the guys haven't been. It's a great golf course, from what I hear. It looks awesome on paper, so we're excited to get there and see it and just enjoy a great team trip together. It's going to be fun. The guys have put in a lot of time and effort and hard work leading up to it, so I really hope it pays off."
