Women’s Golf Eyes First National Championship in 30 Years

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida women's golf team will head to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Championship tournament, which tees off on Friday. This will be the team's 25th appearance in school history, and the first time since 2014, when the Gators finished tied for 18th place. Florida last won the national championship in 1986.
The Gators are fresh off of winning a share of their second NCAA Regional title, using a program record third round score of 11-under 277 at the Baton Rouge Regional. The Orange and Blue won its seventh team tournament title of the 2016 season, which leads the NCAA.
Course Information: The 2016 NCAA National Championship tournament is being held at the par-72, 6,369-yard Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
Format: The championship format consists of 24 teams and 12 individuals completing 54 holes of stroke play. Then, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams then advance to match play on Tuesday and Wednesday for the championship.

Junior Karolina Vlckova (Unhošt, Czech Republic): Vlckova set a school record at the Baton Rouge Regional, carding a -7 (65) third round and winning individual runner-up honors. Her 72.37 stroke average ranks second on the team, while she leads the team with seven top-10 finishes this season. In 2015, Vlckova finished eighth at the Raleigh Regional and qualified for the NCAA Championship as an individual.
Junior Maria Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico): The 2016 Southeastern Conference Women's Golfer of the Year, Torres has posted an extremely strong junior campaign. Her 71.83 stroke average ranks first among Gator golfers, and she also leads the team with 10 top-15 finishes on the season.
Freshman Sam Wagner (Windemere, Fla.): Wagner finished tied for 22nd place at the Baton Rouge Regional. She has competed in every tournament of her freshman season and earned eight top-25 finishes.
Junior Kelly Grassel (Chesterton, Ind.): Grassel is one of only three Gators to claim at least a share of an individual title this season. Hers came at the Florida Challenge in February.
Sophomore Taylor Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.): Tomlinson's 73.06 stroke average ranks third for the Gators for the 2016 season. Her nine top-25 finishes are second on the team.
Head Coach Emily Glaser on NCAA Championship: "We are obviously excited to compete this week, as we have been preparing for this week since August. However, the goal remains the same as it has been all year, which is to make sure we are staying in the present and focusing on the things we can control. If we do that and keep good attitudes, we have a great chance to be competitive."
