TULSA, Okla. – The University of Florida women's tennis team concluded the 2016 season on a rainy Thursday afternoon in Tulsa, Okla. The Gators fell in heartbreaking fashion to the Stanford Cardinal, 4-3 in the NCAA Round of 16. Florida ends the 2016 campaign with a record of 23-3.
Play began at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon with the Gators jumping out to big leads on all three doubles courts. Rain began to fall 30 minutes into the match and play was halted with Gator leads on all doubles courts.
After nearly an hour delay, play resumed indoors and Florida continued to dominate in doubles. No. 3-ranked Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan defeated another Top-5 opponent in Stanford's No. 5-ranked Davidson and Doyle, 6-2 on court one. The Orange and Blue would clinch the doubles point on court three with Anna Danilina and Brianna Morgan's 6-1 victory over Hardebeck and Lampl, 6-1.
In singles play, the Orange and Blue would fall on courts one and five to give the Cardinal a 2-1 lead. Florida would tie the match at 2-all with Keegan's 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win on court four over No. 100 Krista Hardeback. Morgan would push the Gators' lead to 3-2 with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win on court three against No. 67 Caroline Doyle. Stanford would bring the match to 3-all with Melissa Lord's win over Danilina on six. In the end, Belinda Woolcock would fall at the hands of Taylor Davidson on court two, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3 to give the Cardinal tickets to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
The Gators' exit from the 2016 NCAA Tournament is Florida's earliest loss since 2009. Florida will return seven of its eight players for the 2017 season with lone senior Brianna Morgan moving onto a career in psychology.

On today's loss to Stanford in the NCAA Round of 16…
"I know how bad our players feel when a year like this comes to an end this early in the tournament. It certainly was a special journey for us with personal growth and SEC titles along the way. The Florida-Stanford rivalry rarely disappoints, with today as no exception. We knew from what we had seen all year that Stanford may have one of the best teams in college tennis, but we felt prepared and ready to avenge our loss to them from February. In the end, I am proud of our effort and wish the Cardinal good luck going forward."
Final Results
#15 Stanford (No. 15 Seed) 4, #1 Florida (No. 2 Seed) 3
Doubles-Order of Finish: 1, 3*
