Gators Move Up To Third at Schenkel Invitational
Saturday, March 18, 2017 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Florida's men's golf team moved up two spots into a tie for third Saturday after shooting a 282 (-6) in the second round of the Schenkel Invitational, moving the overall score to 564 (-12). It was the second round in a row that the Gators had posted that score.
Four Gators carded four birdies or more and three of them (Ryan Orr, Sam Horsfield, Gordon Neal) tallied five. For the round, the team notched 21 birdies for the second day in a row.
Georgia Southern moved into the top spot after shooting a 276 (-12) in the second round, finishing at 556 (-20). Georgia Southern's Brett Barron leads the individual scores, carding a 66 (-6) on day two to finish 133 (-11) overall.
The Gators are back in action tomorrow at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Georgia, for the final round at 10 a.m.
Head Coach J.C. Deacon
On his team's performance during the first day:
"It was okay. We're really one round away from putting up something good. Sam Horsfield played great again to lead us with a 69 and we just haven't been able to follow that up with anything too deep, so we've got to have all five guys play great tomorrow if we want to win. Georgia Southern is playing some fantastic golf and has set a really good mark. We're going to need something special tomorrow to get the job done."
On what the team has to do tomorrow to do well:
"The birdies are great, we're making plenty of birdies, but we're just making way too many mistakes and that's what's killing us. If we can make a couple of better decisions each during the round, cut a couple of those bogeys out, all of a sudden there is going to be a 68 or 69 instead of 71 or 72. That's what we need tomorrow to win the tournament."
