Gators Clinch Fourth Victory of Season at Schenkel Invitational
Sunday, March 19, 2017 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Florida men's golf team clinched its fourth tournament title of the year on Sunday at the Schenkel Invitational. The Gators carded a 282 (-6) for the third day in a row to finish at 846 (-18) for the weekend, which is the second-lowest score the team has posted all season.
In addition, Sunday's win marked UF's fourth Schenkel Invitational title.
Sophomore Sam Horsfield carded a 70 (-2) on the final day to finish in third place at 207 (-9), best on the team. The finish extended his lead in the top-25 finish category to six on the year.
Meanwhile for the second day in a row, senior Ryan Orr tallied five birdies as he finished round three with a 68 (-4).
In the 2016-17 season, the Orange and Blue have notched wins in four out of eight tournaments and tallied seven top-five finishes. The total score of 846 was the fourth-best of the year.
Individually at the Schenkel, four of five Gators in the lineup finished within the top 18.
Vanderbilt's Patrick Martin took home the individual title, carding a 66 (-6) in the final round to finish at 204 (-12) for the tournament.
The Gators are back in action on Friday, March 31, in the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tennessee.
Head Coach J.C. Deacon
On how he feels about the victory…
"I know it's our fourth team victory of the year, but this one is different. We had to come from way back. Only the guys in our room will really know it, but we've been going through a lot of adversity and for the guys to come out and play the way they did today, hit the clutch shots when they did today was incredibly rewarding for me to see. I am so happy for them. It was an amazing day, really special."
On how the win helps the team after two disappointing tournaments…
"It's huge for us. We were eight strokes back starting the day and to be able to come back and win by two, that shows the guys that there's no lead that's ever out of our reach, that's a big thing for us going forward. We played really poorly in Las Vegas, everyone was disappointed and not winning the Gator Invitational was disappointing, but as Jeremy Foley told me earlier today, when champions get knocked on their back, they get up and win. We have five or six champions on this team who came to the Schenkel this weekend and they sure showed it today."
On Sam Horsfield's tournament performance…
"Sam was our rock and he's been our rock for two years and he did it again today."
On the tournament atmosphere during the final round…
"There were big crowds out there today and it felt like a golf tournament. That experience is going to really serve us well in the next couple of months."
