GAINESVILLE, Fla. β Florida dropped a hard-fought 1-0 match to Mississippi State Thursday evening at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
Β
Tonight's result was MSU's first win in 11 trips to Gainesville.
Β
This Evening's Scoring:
MSU's Aitana Martinez-Montoya took over the Bulldog's season goals lead with her score in the 19th minute. Ilana Izquierdo ran down the ball just above the Florida box. Her through ball found the sliding outstretched foot of Martinez-Montoya, who scored her eighth goal of the season.
Β
One of Florida's best opportunities came with 12 minutes remaining. From midway in the Bulldog half, Tessa Barton sent the ball right to find Josie Curtis in stride. Curtis' shot to the far post was just wide.
Β
The final minute almost saw the tying goal. Julianne Leskauskas stepped in front of a Bulldog pass midway through the MSU half. She found Barton at the top corner of the box. Barton sent the ball to the middle of the box. The MSU clearance landed just above the top of the box where Delaney Tauzel stepped into a hard shot that was deflected wide. Megan Hinnenkamp's deep cross was headed by Madeline Pirrello but no Gators were able to catch up to the ball at the far post.
Β
Hear from Coach Bohon:
On tonight's match:
"You've got to give them a little bit of credit because they had a good game plan but I actually thought we countered pretty well to it, especially in the second half. So it's just disappointing because I felt we adjusted well, we just didn't play to our strengths as much as we needed to in the second half. I think we could have executed a little bit cleaner in the second half." β Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon
