
No. 16 Women's Tennis falls at No. 6 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — The Florida women's tennis team got off to a fast start Thursday afternoon as the Gators number one doubles team of Xinyi Nong and Nikola Daubnerova, ranked No. 22 in the nation heading into the week, upended the 31st-ranked team in Texas' Anastasia Abbagnato and Salma Drugdova 6-2. Unfortunately, the Longhorns won both remaining doubles matches, and closed out three straight singles matches to secure the 4-0 win. Texas improves to 15-4 on the year and 10-2 in the SEC while the Gators fall to 13-5 and 8-4.
Nong and Daubnerova's win was the third victory for the duo in their last four matches, and their fourth win over a nationally-ranked opponent this year. It was also their team-leading 16th win as a doubles tandem this season. Brooke Black and Valery Gynina dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 88 Elizabeth Ionescu and Christasha McNeil at number two doubles, while Lucie Pawlak and Inida Houghton had their five-match winning streak snapped in a 6-3 defeat at the hands of Carmen Herea and Mathilde Ngijol-Carre in the number three slot.
Florida altered its singles lineup a bit, bumping Lucie Pawlak from number five to four, Nong from six to five, and sliding Daubnerova into the six slot. Nong and Gynina, playing at number two singles, both led in the third sets of their respective matches, but were unable to close out their wins before Texas' clinched the overall match.
Pawlak fell first as Ionescu lost just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Daubernova was next as Ngijol-Carre handed the sophomore just her second conference loss of the season 6-4, 6-2. Houghton was taking on the third-ranked player in the nation in the top spot and Herea closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-3 victory
The Gators now make their way to College Station, Texas to take on Texas A&M, ranked number two in the nation. At the time of this posting, the Aggies trailed Auburn 1-0 in their Thursday evening match.
