Both Gators earn conference recognition following NCAA top marks at the East Coast Relays
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Two Florida track and field athletes earned Southeastern Conference weekly honors, announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon following an impressive outing at the East Coast Relays last weekend. Alida van Daalen was named the SEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, while Sydney Sutton earned SEC Women's Freshman of the Week honors.
Van Daalen opened her outdoor senior campaign with an NCAA leading mark of 63.97m/209-10 in the women's discus throw. The nine-time All-American overtook Alabama's Joyce Oguama's previous lead by six feet after her performance over the weekend.
Sutton's award came to fruition after clocking an NCAA top-10 time in the women's 200m dash with a 22.55 (+1.8) finish at the East Coast Relays, good for the No. 4 mark in Florida outdoor history. Prior to her personal best, she anchored the women's 4x100m relay to a 43.12 finish and an NCAA No. 12 mark.
The new accolades tally van Daalen's third SEC Field Athlete of the Week award and Sutton's first as a Gator.
The Orange and Blue will be back in action from May 14-16, as they begin the postseason with the SEC Outdoor Championships hosted by Auburn.
