The freshman set the USATF U20 meet record and Florida school record in the event.
EUGENE, Ore. – Florida women's track & field freshman Claire Stegall delivered on the national stage, winning the USA Track & Field U20 national title in the women's 1500-meter run with a school record time on Friday evening at Hayward Field.
Stegall, the top-seeded entry in the event, got out fast and ran with the lead group through 700 meters before charging into the lead as the bell rang. The freshman crossed the finish line with a USATF meet record and Florida school record time of 4:04.59, overtaking the previous meet record of 4:14.74 from 2012 set by Mary Cain, the youngest female athlete to ever represent the United States at a track & field world championship.
The title makes Stegall the fourth member of the Gators' active roster to hold a USATF U20 national championship, joining Gracelyn Leiseth, Vance Nilsson and India Alix. Leiseth won two titles in 2024, taking both the discus and shot put, while Nilsson claimed the 400-meter hurdles crown. Alix was the long jump champion in 2022.
Also competing on the international stage, Tia Wilson (1500 meters) and Malique Smith-Band (400 meters) will take the track Saturday and Sunday at the Novuna United Kingdom Athletics Championships in Birmingham, while Quincy Penn competes Saturday afternoon at the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations Youth, Junior & Senior National Championships.
At the Athletics Kenya National Championships, Judy Chepkoech qualified for 5000-meter run final, placing fourth in her Thursday heat with a time of 15:32.09. She'll battle for a spot at the 2026 Commonwealth Games when she takes the track for the 5000 meters finale.
