Florida, Texas Play to 1-1 Draw in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Zoe Main scored on a second-half free kick as Florida and Texas soccer played to a 1-1 draw Thursday at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. The Gators outshot the Longhorns 18-5, including 14-1 after halftime.
Tonight's Match
Texas took the lead in the 30th minute when Ashlyn Anderson converted a penalty kick. Florida nearly answered before halftime, but Texas goalkeeper Bayliss Flynn saved Lael Hill's shot with two seconds left in the half.
Florida pressed forward after the break. Flynn stopped another Hill attempt in the 55th minute, and Adia Symmonds penalty kick in the 59th was high. Less than a minute later, Main scored on a free kick to tie the match. It was her fourth goal of the season.
Main said she had practiced free kicks on the team's day off Sunday and scored twice more in training Wednesday.
"I haven't really gotten many chances to shoot on a free kick," Main said. "For some reason, I had a feeling I was going to, so I took, like, five reps in different areas of the field. I was just thinking, 'Value the rep. Make sure it goes in.' Then at practice yesterday, I scored twice on it, so I was like, 'I've got to do it today.'"
Florida continued to create chances. Flynn saved Iori Watanabe's shot in the 82nd minute and Main's attempt toward the upper-right corner in the 88th. Flynn finished with five saves; Florida goalkeeper Jayden Emmanuel made two.
Florida coach Nick Zimmerman liked what he saw from the Gators tonight.
"So proud. So proud of the group," Zimmerman said. "The performance was excellent. We had plenty of chances. And right now, if that's where we're at two months into our process in terms of creating the chances, then we're in a really good spot."
The crowd Thursday included University of Florida President Stuart Bell and his wife, Susan.
"A huge shout-out to the atmosphere and the environment. You're starting to see Gator Nation come out, and they're seeing an exciting match. You could see the crowd as the game went on, and that drives the team. We appreciate it more than you know. Dr. Bell came out tonight with his wife, Susan. It shows this place is different to have a president who comes out, wants to be involved in athletics and makes it a priority. We couldn't be more thankful."
