Rich Dorman
- Title:
- Pitching Coach
- Email:
Veteran coach Rich Dorman joined the UF staff as Pitching Coach in June 2026 as one of the country's most-respected recruiters and developers of collegiate hurlers.
Coming to the Gators after seven seasons at Oregon State (2020-26), Dorman assumed the position of Pitching Coach in Orange & Blue with 10 years of experience in the role at the NCAA Division I level. Concluding his time with the Beavers by producing the nation's top staff in terms of ERA and WHIP in 2026, Dorman mentored a total of 15 MLB Draft picks and 11 different pitchers to All-America honors highlighted by three hurlers in the 2026 campaign alone and the 2022 National Pitcher of the Year in Cooper Hjerpe. Prior to Oregon State, Dorman spent three seasons as the Pitching Coach at Grand Canyon (2017-19) preceded by eight years in the same role with the Seattle Mariners organization (2009-16).
Across 10 seasons in college baseball with Oregon State and Grand Canyon, Dorman saw 21 of his pitchers selected in the MLB Draft for an average of 2.1 players per year. During the 2026 campaign with the Beavers, Dorman's staff reset the program's all-time strikeout record (699) for the fourth time under his watch and led the entire country in ERA (3.22), hits allowed per nine innings (6.94) and WHIP (1.14) while ranking second nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.55) and third in strikeouts per nine (11.8). As a result, three Beavers garnered All-America status in Trey Morris*, Albert Roblez and Dax Whitney – the latter of which was a College Pitcher of the Year finalist.
Over Dorman's last three seasons at Oregon State (2024-26), the Beavers never finished outside the top-30 teams nationally in ERA, H/9 or WHIP – sitting inside the top 20 in ERA and H/9 every year of that stretch. Oregon State was among the top-35 teams in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio over five-straight seasons from 2022-26 while delivering a top-15 K/9 in each of the last two campaigns.
In 2025, Dorman's pitching staff ranked 15th nationally in H/9 (7.79) and K/9 (10.6), 17th in ERA (4.24) and 26th in WHIP (1.34) as Whitney and rookie Ethan Kleinschmit collected All-America status. The Beavers finished inside the top-25 teams in all four categories one year prior in 2024 while three pitchers received All-America honors in Bridger Holmes, Jacob Kmatz and Aiden May. Behind a dominant pitching staff in 2023, Oregon State ranked 22nd in the country in K-to-BB ratio (2.61) and worked to the second-lowest ERA in Pac-12 Conference play.
Going back to 2022, Dorman's staff broke the program's single-season strikeout record (628) for the second-straight year after setting the previous mark at 611 in 2021. OSU finished second in the Pac-12 in ERA (4.19) while issuing the fewest walks (188) and the second-least home runs. The Beavers concluded with the nation's fourth-lowest WHIP (1.25) and fifth-best K-to-BB ratio (3.34) as Ben Ferrer and Hjerpe took home All-America accolades. Hjerpe was a first-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, going 22nd overall to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Oregon State posted a conference-best 3.48 ERA in 2021, a mark that ranked ninth nationally. That came accompanied by top-11 finishes in H/9 (third, 7.03) and WHIP (11th, 1.22). Jake Muholland was honored as Dorman's second-ever All-American hurler, following Christian Chamberlain during his debut season on staff in 2020.
Prior to his OSU tenure, Dorman served as Pitching Coach at Grand Canyon from 2017-19. During his final campaign with the Antelopes in 2019, the GCU pitching staff posted a 4.16 ERA – the second-best mark in the program's 14-year history at the Division I level. Grand Canyon finished with a 3.02 ERA in league play, which led the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and was the third-lowest mark in WAC action over a five-year stretch. Meanwhile, the 2017 Antelopes turned in a 3.57 ERA in conference play in Dorman's inaugural season on staff.
In each of his Dorman's three seasons with the Antelopes (2017-19), Grand Canyon improved its win total from the previous year: 29 in 2017, 33 in 2018 and 36 in 2019. The Antelopes won just 25 games in 2016 prior to his arrival. Grand Canyon was 57-18 in conference play in Dorman's three seasons and the club won 21 of its 25 WAC series. Six pitchers were drafted out of GCU under his tutelage.
Dorman began his coaching career with the Seattle Mariners organization in 2009, serving as the Pitching Coach for the Everett AquaSox for two seasons. Filling the role of Pitching Coach at various levels with Seattle, Dorman spent eight years with the organization from 2009-16 before leaving the Clifton Lumberjacks for the collegiate ranks.
As a player, Dorman pitched in three games for Oregon State in 1999 before transferring to Western Baptist (now Corban) in 2000. As the first-ever player to be selected out of Corban, he was a 13th-round pick in the 2000 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. Dorman went on to appear in nine Minor League seasons from 2000-2008 before retiring at the conclusion of the 2008 campaign with Triple-A Tacoma. He made 128 professional starts over 217 outings, going 52-43 with a 3.80 ERA.
As a native of Medford Ore., he has two children, Alexa Anne and Blake William.
