GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 5 University of Florida women's soccer team opened the home and Southeastern Conference seasons in impressive fashion Friday night with a 4-0 win over Tennessee. Florida is now 4-0 this season, while UT drops to 1-3. The match was played in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 2,831 – the third largest crowd in UF soccer history.
Gator senior All-American Danielle Fotopoulos got UF on the board early in the match, hitting a six-yard shot off a cross from freshman Abby Wambach at the 3:50 mark. Just before halftime, senior All-American Erin Baxter headed the ball for the goal at 44:50 off a double-assist set up by Melissa Pini's corner kick and Fotopoulos' flick of the ball to Baxter.
Wambach struck again for the Gators just 13 seconds into the second half, hitting an eight-yard shot from Fotopoulos' low cross. Wambach scored again less than eight minutes later, hitting again from eight yards off a cross from senior Katie Tullis.
The Gators return to action again Sunday when they play host to No. 17 Georgia (3-1) at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs were upset Friday evening by South Carolina 2-0.
