Men's Swimming Defeats LSU, 135-98

The No. 14 Florida Gators men's swimming and diving team took first place in nine of the 13 events en route to a 135-98 win over Southeastern Conference LSU Thursday at the LSU Natatorium. Florida remains undefeated all-time against the Tigers at 14-0.
Florida moves to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in SEC action, while LSU moves to 2-3 overall and 1-3 against SEC teams.
"This is the best we've looked so far this season from the standpoint of our speed and how we looked on the blocks," said Head Coach Gregg Troy. "We've still got a long wat to go, but we're seeing some signs of life."
Florida began the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay. Mike Jansen, Ian Chadsey, Duncan Sherrard and Carlos Jayme combined for the first-place finish with a time of 3:20.44. The Gators also took second place in the event with a time of 3:20.99, jumping out to an early 13-0 lead. LSU roared back in the second event of the meet, taking first, second and third place in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Carlos Jayme (Goais, Brazil) took first place in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in at 1:40.51, followed by Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) with a time of 1:42.33 and Scott Kaufmann (Sparks, Nev.) at 1:43.27. The Gators finished first and second in the 50-yard freestyle, with Jim Kostowicz (Longwood, Fla.) turning in a time of 20.76 and Hendrik Odendaal (Stellenbosch, South Africa) clocking in at 20.95, respectively.
Florida swept the top three spots in the 200-yard individual medley as well, and at the first break, the Gators led 66-27. In the one-meter event, LSU's Kyle VanArdsell scored 294.23 points to win the event, followed by fellow Tiger Jace Pitre, who scored 286.50 points. Florida's Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) finished third with 281.40 points, and Gator Reggie Coote (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) closed out the one-meter competition with a score of 272.25 points.
Florida swept the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke. LSU's Ross Buffington won the 500-yard freestyle, followed by Florida's Kaufmann and Tiger Jan Minartz. After 10 events, the Gators led 122-65.
In three-meter diving, Florida's Coote finished first with a score of 309.83, followed by fellow Gator Wilcox, who scored 301.13 points to finish second. Florida's Philip Norris (Longwood, Fla.) won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:03.70. Florida finished out the meet by exhibitioning its 400-yard freestyle rerlay teams.
Eight swimmers and one diver will compete in the Dallas Morning News Classic hosted by Southern Methodist University Friday and Saturday. The Gators' next dual meet is Friday, Jan. 25, against SEC for Auburn at 7 p.m. at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. A portion of that meet will be shown on "Breakfast with the Gators" on Feb. 3 on the Sunshine Network.
