Women's Golf in Top 10 at NCAA East Regionals
Thursday, May 6, 2004 | Women's Golf
After carding a 310 (+22) for the first round of competition at the 2004 NCAA East Regional Championships, the No. 13 University of Florida women's golf team is tied for 10th place.
"We kind of put ourselves into a hole," head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "Tomorrow is moving day. We need to dig our way out. This is a long course for us. Looking over our scorecards, we didn't make enough birdies. We had a few double bogeys because of poor decisions."
Duke is in first place with a score of 286. UNLV is second (297), followed by Oklahoma State (298), Tulane (301) and Auburn (302) to round out the top five.
Sophomore Aimee Cho (Orlando, Fla.) led the Lady Gators after 18 holes as she finished with a four-over par (76) to tie for 28th place.
Sophomores Camila Gonzalez (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and Tarah McNaughton (Bradenton, Fla.), and senior Amanda Dick (Clearwater, Fla.) finished the day with a 78. Dick had a team high of two birdies. Junior Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood, Fla.) carded an 81.
"Tarah is coming out of her slump," Briles-Hinton said. "She was one over on the back nine which is the harder than the front nine."
The top eight teams at the end of the three-day tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships hosted by Auburn.
Florida will tee off Friday afternoon. Live results will be available at www.GatorZone.com, courtesy of Golfstat.com
