Wednesday, January 28, 2026 | Women's Basketball
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The most challenging stretch of the Florida Women's Basketball Team's schedule continues this Thursday as the Gators (13-9, 1-6) host No. 4/4 Texas (19-2, 4-2) at Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. EST, and the game is being broadcast on SECN+.
The Longhorns matchup is the second of three consecutive games against ranked competition for Florida, as the Gators were at No. 6/6 at LSU on Monday, and travel to No. 5/6 Vanderbilt Sunday. No SEC team has ever played three consecutive games against top 6 teams over a seven-day stretch during the regular season, and based on available research, no Division I team in the modern era has accomplished that feat either.
The Gators are coming off of a tough 89-60 loss to LSU which saw Florida hold the Tigers NCAA-leading offense to just 36 points in the first half. LSU's Jade Richard scored 14 of her game-high 20 points after the intermission to help the Tigers to their 19th win of the season. Liv McGill led the Gators with 14 points in the defeat.
The sophomore point guard now has 1,070 points in her collegiate career, 28 points behind Jana Bragg '88 on the Gators career scoring chart.
McGill has also put herself in the running for the Nancy Lieberman Award presented annually to the Division I Women's Basketball player who exemplifies the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Nancy Lieberman during her career. The sophomore was left off the 20-player preseason list, but the mid-season watch list is due to come out at the end of the month. McGill is averaging 23.0 points, 5.8 assists and 2.85 steals per game, while the 20 players on the preseason list are averaging a collective 14.4 points, 5.2 assists and 2.17 steals.
Texas opened the 2025-26 season with 15 straight non-conference wins, and three consecutive SEC victories, before dropping a pair of top-10 road decisions at LSU (70-65) and South Carolina (68-65). The Longhorns rebounded to best Texas A&M 80-35 on Jan. 18, and their game against Arkansas, originally scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 25, was postponed until Feb. 19 due to the inclement weather that blanketed much of the contiguous 48 over the weekend.
Texas ranks fifth in the nation in scoring average (88.8 ppg), and field goal percentage (.508), while outscoring opponents by 35.8 points per game (third in the country). Defensively, the Longhorns allow the opposition to score just 53.0 points per game (fifth in the nation) and connected on 35.9 percent of their field goal attempts (22nd).
In conference play, Texas' offensive output drops to 77.2 points per game, and 45.8 shooting from the field, but the team's defense holds SEC teams to 57.3 points per game (lowest in the league), and 37.3 percent from the floor (fourth lowest in the SEC).
Junior forward Madison Booker is averaging 19.0 points per game to lead the Longhorns' offense, while also chipping in 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.57 steals per game. Sophomore guard Jordan Lee adds 14.2 points per game, while making 35.2 percent of her shots from three-point range, and 6-6 senior center Kyla Oldacre is averaging 11.7 points while connecting on 64.3 percent of her field goal attempts on the year. Three other Longhorns are averaging more than nine points per game.
The Gators and Longhorns have squared off against one another on just five previous occasions, with Florida owning a 3-2 edge in the series. The first four meetings came back in the 1990s, but Texas picked up a 72-46 victory in the team's inaugural SEC season a year ago (box score). Florida made just 33.3 percent of its shots from the field, including one of 18 from beyond the arc. Ra Shaya Kyle (12 points) and Liv McGill (nine) paced the Gators offense, while Kyla Oldacre came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points for the Longhorns.
