COLUMBIA, S.C. — The 17th-ranked Florida women's tennis team rebounded from a Thursday loss to No. 1 Georgia by picking up a 4-1 road win over No. 24 South Carolina Saturday afternoon. The Gators are now 11-4 on the year, including 6-3 in the SEC, while the Gamecocks fell to 9-8 and 2-7.
Doubles
Florida got out to a hot start as the Gators picked up the doubles point for just the second time in their last seven matches. In the top spot, Xinyi Nong and Nikola Daubnerova, ranked 34th in the nation heading into the week, made quick work of the ninth-ranked team in the country upending Helena Buchwald and Lauren Friedman 6-1. It was the duos second win in the team's last eight outings.
At number two doubles, Brooke Black and Valery Gynina also broke into the win columns, snapping a five-match losing streak with a 6-4 decision over Kaitlyn Carnicella and Taylor Goetz. Lucie Pawlak and India Houghton were leading 5-4 in the third slot when Black and Gynina clinched the doubles point.
Singles
Black had her seven-match winning streak ended against the Bulldogs Thursday, but she was first in the clubhouse Saturday closing out Goetz 7-5, 6-1 at number four singles, and putting the Gators up 2-0. The victory upped Black's record in conference play to a team-best 6-1.
Nong got the start at number six singles, but dropped a close 6-4, 6-3 decision to Jana Stojanova. That was the last win the Gamecocks would record on the day.
Paskauskas was next to finish, topping Sarak Borkop 6-2, 6-4 at number three. The London native has won three of her last four decisions, and is now 4-3 in SEC competition, and tied for the team lead in wins with 16.
With one win to go to clinch the match, the Gators led at both number two and five singles. It was Pawlak in the fifth spot who closed out a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Jane Dunyon to give Florida the win. Pawlak's five victories in conference play are second on the team, and her 16 overall wins are tied with Paskauskas for the most on the Gators.
