Gators Ready to Take On 2019 SEC Championships
Thursday, October 31, 2019 | Cross Country
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Florida cross country programs begin postseason competition on Friday morning at the SEC Championships, as the University of Kentucky will serve as host of the 2019 SEC Cross Country Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. Additionally, for the first time, the SEC Cross Country Championship will be televised live on the SEC Network.
In the SEC Cross Country Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released in August, Florida's women were slotted to finish third, while the men were picked to tie for fourth.
The men's 8K race is scheduled for an 9 a.m. start, while the women's 6K race will begin at 10 a.m. ET. An awards ceremony will follow the women's race. Admission to the 2019 SEC Cross Championships is free and open to the public.
Arkansas is the nation's top-ranked women's team, while Ole Miss is the highest-ranked men's team at No. 11. SEC teams receiving votes include the Arkansas and Alabama men and the Ole Miss and Tennessee women. Ole Miss won its first SEC men's cross country title last year in Auburn. The Arkansas women enter the 2019 SEC Championships with six consecutive SEC titles and 19 overall.
Senior Jessica Pascoe, reigning SEC women's champion and runner of the year, leads the Gators in looking to tally back-to-back titles at the meet, while in pursuit of her fifth consecutive individual title this season. Pascoe has put together a historic senior season thus far, becoming the first UF women's runner to notch four consecutive individual titles after collecting her fourth first-place finish this season at the Arturo Barrios Invitational at Texas A&M. She has been named the SEC Women's Runner of the Week twice this season, while also earning USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honors (10/15).
Payton Capes-Davis continues to contribute as one of the Florida women's top runners, notching a pair of top-five finishes at the Mountain Dew Invitational and Arturo Barrios Invitational, while redshirt senior Elisabeth Bergh – a 2018 All-SEC Second Team selection – looks to build upon last season's eighth-place finish at SECs, returning for the Gators after her absence in the last meet. Bergh has turned in a top-15 finish at the FSU Invitational and top-50 finish at Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational.
Imogen Barrett finished 32nd at last year's meet, though, the sophomore has improved in collecting top-10 finish at the FSU Invitational and top-40 finish at the Arturo Barrios Invitational, while Grace Blair will also contribute, earning a top-10 finish and top-40 finish at the MDI and FSU Invitational respectively. Pamela O'Brien, Maria Fernandez, Jackie Addy and Madison Morse figure to make immediate impacts in their first SEC Championship, as all have continually improved over the course of the year to feature in the Gators' SEC lineup.
For the men, Matt Clark and Colin Schaefer have emerged as two of Florida's top runners, each with a pair of top-10 finishes (FSU, MDI) and top-30 finishes (Arturo Barrios Invitational), while Jack Guyton returns after his absence to add to the Gators' depth with a pair of top-10 finishes on the year at the FSU Invitational and MDI. Schaefer (21st) and Guyton (27th) finished within the top-30 of last year's SEC meet.
Nick Deal, Blake Lowery, Trevor Foley and Marshal Dillon also add to the Gators' strength, while newcomers Matt Bomkamp, Hugh Brittenham and Caden Monk will look to help the men's team in postseason action.
